NSERC-CREATE TRAINING PROGRAM IN QUANTITATIVE BIOMEDICINE

SUMMER SCHOOL IN CELL BIOPHYSICS
UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA JULY 16-20, 2012

We are pleased to announce the first Summer School in Cell Biophysics hosted by the University of Ottawa and the NSERC-CREATE training program in Quantitative Biomedicine (July 16-20, 2012 on the uOttawa campus).

This event is directed at graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from the physical sciences (e.g. physics, applied mathematics, engineering, computer science, etc.) and the life sciences(e.g. neuroscience, cell and molecular biology, physiology, etc.) who wish to learn about the biology of complex cellular systems as well as the quantitative tools employed to understand and manipulate them. The topics discussed will range from understanding the influence of the microenvironment on critical aspects of cell biology (stem cell fate, cancer metastasis, motility), how cells are able to sense the physical environment (neurophysiology, cytoskeletal mechanics, integrins and focal adhesion dynamics) and tutorials about the modern biophysical tools employed to generate a quantitative picture of cell biology (atomic force microscopy, surface plasmon resonance, microfabrication and microfluidics, microscopy, image tracking and quantitation approaches).

Several national and international leaders in their respective fields will be present to lecture about the fundamentals and applications of their work. Lectures will take place every day in addition to student poster session(s), pub nights, lab tours and activities. This is a great opportunity for students and postdoctoral fellows to meet, socialize and discuss their research with one another and major leaders in the field today. We look forward to welcoming you to Ottawa this summer!

Tuition

A nominal tuition of $150 will cover registration, materials, coffee breaks and lunches. Partial financial support is available for those demonstrating need and will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Accommodation

A block of rooms in campus housing will be reserved for Summer School participants. Registration and cost information will be advertised soon. After being accepted into the Summer School, out of town participants will be instructed on how to secure accommodation.

Poster session

Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows are strongly encouraged to participate in the poster session. After
registering for the summer school please use the following Word template for your poster abstract (Poster
Abstract Template) and email it to Elvira Evangelista (eevangel@uottawa.ca). Posters should be no larger than
